Joomla on it's own is a great product, but just like we do here at Joomla Tutorials, you will probably want to add some Extensions for added functionality at some point. The sheer number of extensions available for Joomla is one of the reasons Joomla continues to dominate the Free/Open Source CMS sphere. So, probably at some point you will need to jump in and find some Extensions for your site. Where can you find these great extensions? They are all in one place: Extensions.joomla.org Using JED (Joomla Extensions Directory) End users Most of us will be end users of JED. We're looking for a particular extension to perform a particular function. Here are some tips to keep in mind: - Start by taking a look at the Editors Picks.
- The Most Popular Extensions as well as the Most Favored are also excellent indications of quality extensions.
- Don't just jump in and install every Extension you see. Take the time to read the reviews and evaluate things first. Not all extensions are equal.
- Many Extension listings now contain a Demo link, use it and test the Extension out first.
- As a user, if you do find an Extension you think is worthy of a review (good or bad) why not take the time to register an account on JED and leave your review. In this way, you're helping to contribute value to JED, and the greater Joomla Community.
- Take note of the Extensions Type, it will be either non-commercial (free) or commercial (paid). Keep in mind, many good extensions can be free, and many paid extensions can be poor. Choose wisely. Don't be afraid to pay for good Extensions either.
- Keep up to date with things, especially the Extensions you run on your own website. Developers are constantly updating, and at times for security reasons, it's essential you keep up to date. We recommend all users consider subscribing to the following two RSS feeds. You can even do so via email. FAQs: Where do I find Extensions for older versions of Joomla, like 1.0.x? You don't. Especially when it comes to Joomla 1.5.x now being fully support and Joomla 1.0.x no longer being supported. If you need extra functionality for your Joomla site, you should consider migrating to Joomla 1.5.x What is the problem with Extensions released under a non-GPL license? You can still find non-GPL licenses but not on the JED. This is because they are technically incompatible. Some may be Open Source, some may not. You should always avoid encrypted extensions because you can never change the code in an emergency or if the developer goes bust. Developers
Most developers will already be familiar with how to use JED. However, be sure to check out the Listing Rules. The JED Editors can also be contacted by posting here.
